The Baywind Community Ownership Scheme is the first of its kind in the UK and aims to promote the generation of renewable energy and increase awareness of energy conservation by bringing the financial benefits of the present boom in wind powered electrical generation to local communities.
The scheme allows communities to purchase shares in wind farms located all around the UK and so benefit from the sale of the electricity that is produced. All the profits derived from electricity generation are paid back to the shareholders.
Preference of share ownership is given to local investors, so that the community can share some of the economic benefits from their local wind farm.
Owning shares in a local wind energy project also brings with it many additional benefits including the following.
· improving peoples' understanding and appreciation of wind energy production generally
· maximising the regional economic benefits from the harnessing of an endless natural resource
· making people conscious of the amount of energy they are using and so promoting energy conservation
